willing -- >> with all due respect, that's a bunch of malarky. >> a vice presidential debate turned into a spiritual one. a look at some of the feisty exchanges. good morning and welcome to "news 4 today." i'm eun yang. >> and good morning, everybody. i'm aaron gilchrist. tonight the center of the baseball world is nats park. >> the teams heading to game five after the biggest hit in team history. what an amazing hit by jayson werth, who became the hero last night. >> 13 pitches is what we saw leading up to that big hit. he hit it a couple of times, couple of foul balls. a lot of people got great balls they'll keep for posterity, but the big hit, number 13, the one that was a home run and sealed the deal for the nats. >> and the celebration was so amazing, we knew the season was on the line. we were tied up. and then that walk-off home run, what an amazing hit. the stadium went crazy, i mean, wild. you heard it from your house. >> i live 4, 4 1/2 blocks away, and you could actually hear the cheers coming from nats park that far away because people were just ecstatic about this. >> game five is tonight.

nats ace gio gonzalez will go up against adam wainwright, both of whom pitched during the nationals game one win. first pitch at 8:37. you can be there. standing room only tickets go on sale at 10:00 this morning. orioles fans also have a big win to celebrate. the orioles overcame a heartbreaking loss on wednesday to earn their own extra innings win last night. j.j. hardy knocked in the winning run in the 13th, and then the o's pitching staff held on to the lead for the 2-1 vic tr tri. that forces a game five between the o's and the yankees. >> a win tonight would be so sweet. >> it would be too awesome. when you think about baseball, you think 85 degrees and sunny. not the case today. >> fall is here in a big way. storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson has a look at chilly temperatures this morning. >> this really is football weather we've got coming up for the next, well, at least half of the weekend. out there this morning,

temperatures ranging anywhere from the 30s, upper 30s to the upper 40s. tomorrow morning, the range 20s to 30s. right now, as we get into areas of largo and tyson's and up north in olney, you can see the temperature 42 to 40 to 37 degrees under a mostly clear sky. watch the clouds. just a few drifting through. then we've got more back to the west that will be coming into the area later today. kind of a partly sunny type of day. there's a look. we'll turn partly sunny by noontime. 3:00, partly sunny from chilly to cool and breezy for the afternoon. temperature up to 62 to 64 degrees by 3:00 and 4:00 today. so cold front comes through, temperatures pick up, and temperatures tumble. right now first 4 traffic. still watching the situation in quantico traveling i-95 northbound in quantico. still seeing report of an accident, and delays are growing as you make your way northbound. i spoke with chopper not too long ago. they should be there very shortly.

when i return, we should have a live look and check things out in that area. let's head over to i-you ha hii make your way eastbound. not terrible, but you are starting to see some congestion. further east as you pass the fairfax county parkway, nice and clear from the fairfax county parkway to the beltway, travel lanes are open. that drive only taking 11 minutes. i'm back in ten with a look at chopper 4. aaron and eun, over to you. mitt romney bringing his campaign over to the battleground state of virginia. in just a few hours, he'll hold a rally in richmond. the presidential nominee will speak at the super center in richmond. and he'll join his running mate paul ryan at a rally in lancaster, ohio. this evening president obama will host a dinner for winners of a campaign contest in the d.c. area. he does not have any campaign stops today. pundits are calling the vice presidential debate a draw. vice president joe biden and

congressman paul ryan sparred on a number of issues, including the economy, the crisis in syria, health care, and abortion. ryan said there aren't enough rich americans to tax to pay for all the spending. vice president joe biden said the only way to pay for romney's plan is to raise middle class taxes. the two also shed their differences on libya. >> we should not be imposing these devastating defense cuts because what that does, when we equivocate on our values, when we show we're cutting our own defense, it makes us more weak. it projects weakness. when we look weak, our adversaries are more willing to test us, they're more brazen in their attacks, and they're much more willing to attack. >> that's a bunch of malarky. the congressman cut defense spending in his budget $300 million below what we asked for. >> both agreed it's time to wind down u.s. involvement. ryan said he agreed with the president to pull troops out of the country by 2014 but felt the

white house should not announce a deadline and expose potential weakness. a difficult day for the wife of a man beaten and robbed in eastern market. she'll come face to face with the subjects in court. thomas macelin has been in the hospital since august. he's blind in one eye and unable to walk or feed himself. last night a business community in capitol hill announced a $10,000 trust for macelin's family. his wife abby accepted the donation. she also talked about a safety festival being held next weekend. >> be part of a greater community. this is not only a reminder that we're members of this community, but it's a visceral and real experience for us to bond together in a way we should be doing every day, and it shouldn't take horrible experiences like these to inspire that spirit. >>homas branch and couti are expected in court today. the third defendant, waived his hearing. a 4-year-old boy is lucky to be alive after he fell from a ninth floor window in silver

spring. this happened at an apartment building on piney branch road. a tree helped break that fall. the boy's family was at home at the time. he was taken to children's hospital with a broken femur and a head injury. this morning several families in montgomery koipt co are out of their hoemds after a fire tears through townhouses. it happened along cannes avenue in olney, maryland, last night. one home is a total loss while others were damaged. plumbe plumbers using a torch to work on pipes may have started the fire. neighbors say they were shocked to see the homes go up in flames. >> everything the family had in there, it just went away, it's gone. the red cross is assisting those families, but it does not appear that anyone was hurt. six minutes after the hour right now. ahead, the surprising winner of this year's nobel peace prize.

how about this for an eye opening discovery? a florida map walking along the beach about 35 miles north of miami when he stumbled upon an eyeball. i don't think he stumbled on this, though it's big enough he could have. the man called florida fish and wildlife officials and turned over that huge eye for some research. the federal wildlife commission has also stepped in to try to figure out what kind of animal this eyeball belonged to. beautiful blue eyes. >> probably a big squid. what did you say, veronica? >> cyclops. >> i still think it could be some sort of prop. the color is so intense. it's hard to believe it's real. >> they think maybe a squid or a whale or something like that. >> all right. very nice.

northbound i-95 is shut down due to a crash in that area. chopper 4 is over the scene. it reports this accident is following an overturned vehicle. police and fire department both on the scene. if you're traveling russell road headed to i-95 northbound, you cannot get onto northbound i-95 now. 95 looking like at least a mile backup at this time. if you're traveling in the quantico area heading on 95 northbound, expect some delays. i'm going to keep watching this and give you another update in ten minutes. let's head over to maryland. md-355 between mot road and lewisdale road. i can see i-270 northbound starting to hit the breaks at 109. delays in and around clarksburg road. 6:12 now. the former redskin wading into a hotly contested political issue. it's slow going for the retired craft. the 12-mile trek is going to take two days. right now it's headed to a private parking lot for a nine-hour layover. that layover happening as crews deal with power lines farther ahead on the route. the trip will end at the california science museum where the shuttle will spend its retirement, take a little rest there to prep. hundreds of trees were cleared away from the city, and sidewalks had to be closed. for pedestrians, looks like a lot of fun at the news desk. melissa mollet, news 4. i think it ran through a red light. new this morning, the mars land rover curiosity appears to have made a very surprising yet familiar find on the red planet. while testing rocks for chemical compositions, curiosity uncovered a rock that is new to mars but very similar to ones found on earth around hawaii and other pacific islands. nasa is being very careful when it comes to describing what this means. curiosity landed there in august and is trying to uncover whether there was ever life on mars.

new this morning, the winner of the 2012 nobel peace prize. >> the nobel committee has decided that the nobel peace prize for 2012 is to be awarded to the european union. >> that announcement made just a short time ago in oslo, norway. the chair of the nobel committee says the european union helped transform once wartorn europe into a continent of peace. the award comes as the eu is confronting its biggest financial crisis since its creation in the 1950s. the european union parliament president tweeted he was, quote, deeply touched the echlu had wo. a man arrested at l.a.x. for carrying a suitcase full of weapons will be in court this morning. he was stopped on his way from japan to boston. he was wearing flame retardant pants and knee pads. police found a smoke grenade, knives, a hatchet, body bags,

and other suspicious items in his checked luggage. the defense department is hoping to build a public-private partnership to help thwart cyber attacks. leon panetta says government and business need to work together to promote cyber security. iran launched a series of sib err attacks on oil and gas companies in the persian gulf. they appear to be in retailiation for u.s. sanctions against the country. panetta called those the most destructive the private sector has seen. a plane intercepted by turkey was carrying russian military equipment. the turkish military forced the syrian flight to land wednesday. state media reports missile parts, radio receivers, and other equipment was found on board. syria called the incident piracy, and russia says the search of the plane was illegal. it further heightens tensions between turkey and syria that have been firing shells at each other since last week.

coming up at 19 after the hour. today colorado authorities hope that they can say if the body they found is that of a missing girl or if the search should continue. today marks one week since the disappearance of 10-year-old jessica ridgeway. earlier this week, police discovered a dismembered body in a rural park about seven miles from the child's home. detectives are trying to figure out if the person could be jessica. she hasn't been seen since leaving for school last friday morning. a traffic aleathrt in fairf county now. right after the rush, vdot will shut down the left hov lamp from i-66 eastbound that goes to the inner loop of the beltway. vdot says it needs to close the ramp to finish the express lanes project on time. all traffic will have to use the ramp on the right side of 66 to get on the beltway. construction workers will say, yes, this may cause more backups now, but that should ease up soon. >> we live here. we drive through it. we're a part of the pack. we understand it. but we know the end is near and

the opening is coming and there are better times that lie ahead and more options to getting in and around ogden, virginia. >> the hov ramp and express lanes are scheduled to open before the new year. >> i hate losing. hate it. right now we're losing jobs and money for our schools to casinos and other states like west virginia. question 7 creates 12,000 jobs with a new resort casino and expanded table games. >> former redskins linebacker lavar arrington is the new face of a pro expanding gambling ad. he asked voters to check yes on question 7, which would allow table games in maryland and put a sixth casino in prince george's county. the redskins just announced last week its support for that measure. the debate has also become the most expensive in state history, more than $36 million spent on advertising. today we expect to learn if robert griffin iii will be officially cleared to play on sunday. the rookie quarterback has had a

a bitter battle between two california democratic congressional candidates nearly turned physical during a debate yesterday. representative brad sherman and fellow congressman howard berman went nose to nose. one of them put his arm around the other one in a not so friendly way. a police officer came onto the stage and asked the men to move away from each other. pretty tense situation there.

rapper nelly is free this morning after police in texas uncovered heroin, marijuana, and a gun on board his tour bus. border patrol agents found 36 zip-lock bags of heroin, a small amount of marijuana, and a loaded .45 caliber pistol. police say somebody else on board claimed the drugs and the gun were his. he was arrested. nelly and the others were released. it is now 6:27. 49 degrees. after the break, it's tough to swallow. whose water bill may be going up. i'm still tracking breaking news on the road. russell road trying to get on i-95, that exit ramp that's cleared. you should be able to take it very, very soon. they towed the car out of the roadway. fire department and police there gone. let's head over to i-95 and talk about delays. still seeing in quantico a three-mile backup, and your delays continue. as you get closer to fairfax county parkway, first accident in the left shoulder lane. you are seeing volume continuing northbound. you see another accident, this one in your right shoulder lane. travel speeds right now from quantico about 31 miles per hour. that drive is going to take you about 45 minutes at least. i'm back in ten. eun and aaron, over to you. 6:33. right now thousands of people are about to start their weekend with the susan g. komen three-day walk for a cure. the 60-mile walk is designed to raise awareness and money. megan mcgrath is live at the d.c. armory, where an opening ceremony is under way. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun.

that opening ceremony scheduled to start any time now. you can see the folks starting to assemble. they were checking in. all these great outfits. as you can imagine, a sea of pink here. i don't know if you can see the woman with the flashing hat. we've seen pink wings, pink father bowas, you name it. a lot of pink outfits. 60 miles over the course of three days. everybody had to raise at least $2,300 to participate. many raised even more than that. all of it going -- the majority of it going to a great cause, the fight against breast cancer. behind me, flamingo road, the team from seattle. now, you are a survivor, 28 years, almost 29 years. >> almost 29 next month. >> you have done this a number of times. talk about why you feel it's important to participate in this and raise money. >> this is -- washington, d.c., is my 17th walk. seattle a month ago was 16. i am so lucky to be here, and i

have been to so many funerals. i signed the banner this morning. seven names of people i've said good-bye to, and i do not want my granddaughters, my first granddaughter is just a teenager now. i do not want her to fight the same battle i did. no way. >> now, we were talking about the numbers are down this year. 1,600 participating this year. we had 2,300 last year. there was the controversy with planned parenthood and funding, and numbers seem to have been dropping since then. just your thoughts on that. is it important to make sure the fund-raising keeps going? >> oh, absolutely. in my fund-raising letter, i said breast cancer doesn't care whether you're pro life or pro choice. it doesn't care what sex you are. it doesn't care what race you are. it doesn't care. it doesn't care what country you're from. and every single dollar is a closer step toward a cure. the difference in what's offered to women today compared to me 28 years ago is phenomenal, but it's still not good enough. people are doing everything

right, and they still lose their battle. >> all right thank you, ladies, for joining us. i don't know if i mentioned. they are from seattle. have a great time. of course, this is going to be going on all weekend long. reporting live outside the d.c. armory, megan mcgrath, news 4. back to you guys in the studio. >> thanks, megan. the meningitis outbreak continues to spread this morning. according to the cdc, virginia has 30 confirmed cases of the infection. 9 have been reported in maryland. one person in each of those states died. the nationwide death toll now stands at 14. in all, 170 people have been sickened in the outbreak that now spans 11 states. the massachusetts pharmacy linked to tainted steroid shots has recalled all of its products. today an alexandria woman will learn just how long she'll spend in jail for a deadly road rage incident. gloria mcmillan pled guilty in august to felony hit and run. her suv dragged 21-year-old shalinda arrington. it happened after the two got in an argument on harrison lane in mt. vernon in may.

arrington was on the way to the hospital to visit her mother recovering from a stroke. records show that mcmillan has been cited in the best for reckless driving. a new independent report shows many school facilities in prince george's counties are in fair or poor condition. only 30 of the more than 180 in the county are considered to be in good condition. it looks like it could take as much as $2.8 billion to get everything taken care of. >> i've noticed all of pg county, a lot of the schools are old and need to be rebuilt and things of that nature and renovated. at least renovation. >> the facility is poor, and i wish they would definitely replace the bathrooms. >> the school board will review the findings at its next meeting on october 23rd. >> people who live in prince george's county could see an increase in their water bill soon. a council committee approved a 7.5% increase. that would give wssc the right to add $5.23 to every bill.

that are pro israel. it's in response to anti-jihad ads put up this week in a handful of metro stations. the american freedom defense initiative compares muslims to savages. a care spokesman has not said what the ads will say but say they will promote mutual understanding and challenge hate. an administrator at galludet university in hot water is getting support from a surprising place. maryland governor martin o'malley as well as many other supporters of the state's gay marriage law wants chief diversity officer angela mccaskill to be reinstated. this week she was put on paid leave after the school found out she signed a petition against the law. o'malley says everyone has a right to take part in the political process. a difficult day for the wife of a man beaten and robbed in eastern market. she'll come face to face with the suspects in court. thomas maslin has been in the hospital since august. he is now blind in one eye and unable to walk or feed himself.

their homes after a fire tears through a row of townhouses. it happened along cannes avenue in olney, maryland, last night. one home is a total loss while two others are damaged. firefighters say plumbers were using a torch to work on pipes may have started that fire. neighbors say they were shocked to see the home go up in flames. >> everything that family had in there is just went away. it's gone. >> the red cross is assisting those families, but it does not appear anyone was hurt. a prince george's county council member is ordering a crackdown on a property manager in langley park. this is an update on a story first reported by our prince george's county bureau earlier this week. people living in the bedford station, victoria station, and new bury square apartments. they say they're living in deplorable conditions. for years, many complained of bed bugs and mites as well as holes in bedroom ceilings and
